Xavier Society of Law and Justice

The Xavier Society of Law and Justice (XSLAJ) is a student-led academic body of Xavier Law School, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, established with the vision to bridge classroom pedagogy with elite industry standards. Rooted in the rich Jesuit tradition of preparing "men and women for others," the society operates under the profound guiding philosophy to "have the courage to use your own reason." XSLAJ is dedicated to nurturing a legacy of legal excellence, professional leadership, and societal responsibility by providing students with a transformative platform to explore the real-world dimensions of law. Through its critically acclaimed flagship initiatives—including the Xavier Mediation Competition (XMC), the Ignatius Trial and Advocacy Competition (IGNITAC), Vox Legis Xaveriana (VLX), the intellectual Colawquia talk series, and practical Legalese workshops—the society actively sharpens core advocacy, drafting, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) skills. By fostering regular collaborations with top-tier law firms, judicial officers, and distinguished scholars, XSLAJ continuously challenges legal minds to look beyond traditional academic benchmarks and champion the holistic integrity of justice.

Chairperson

Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., is the Founder Vice-Chancellor of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, serving the Chairperson of XSLAJ. A Jesuit priest of the Calcutta Province, an educationist, and an economist, he previously served as the Principal of St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Kolkata from 2009 to 2017. Beyond academia, Father Felix Raj is the Founder-President of SNEGAM, an NGO dedicated to educating underprivileged children, and has received fourteen prestigious accolades, including the Banga Bibhushan and Siksha Ratna from the Government of West Bengal.

Convenor

Dr. Siddhant Chandra has been serving as the Convenor of XSLAJ since July 2025, after successfully co-convening XMC 2025. Under his steady and clear leadership, the society successfully executed major flagship events like XITAC 2025, IGNITAC 2025, VLX I, Xavier Intra Mediation Competition 2026, XMC 2026 with structured planning and high student participation. He balances strict academic rigor with accessible mentorship, fostering a deep culture of intellectual curiosity and disciplined work ethics among the members. Known as a constant source of motivation, his thoughtful vision has transformed XSLAJ into a thriving community built on student leadership, confidence, and excellence.

Co-convenor

Dr. Subhajit Chakraborty has been serving as the Co-Convenor of XSLAJ since July 2025, providing remarkable dedication and a clear vision to the society. He has successfully co-guided flagship events like XITAC 2025 and IGNITAC 2025, VLX I, Xavier Intra Mediation Competition 2026, XMC 2026 serving as an organizational backbone that ensures structured and precise execution. Dr. Chakraborty brings academic seriousness and a thoughtful approach to every discussion, helping student teams refine ideas into impactful outcomes. His supportive, warm nature and commitment to long-term growth foster a strong culture of discipline, teamwork, and confidence within the society.

The Xavier Society of Law and Justice (XSLAJ) operates through a structured two-tiered hierarchy comprising a 6-member Core Committee and a dedicated Working Committee of 15 members.

Core Committee & Working Committee

The Core Committee includes —the Secretary (Mr. Debdeep Giri) and the Treasurer (Mr. Swayam Bhattacharya)—who manage institutional sanctions, external communications, and budgetary approvals, alongside four other Core Committee Members namely- Emun Aman, Aditi Roy Chowdhury, Haris Daniyel and Aina Chotia. Supporting them is the broader Working Committee, which is organized into specialized functional wings.

  • Highlight Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR): To promote the growing significance of collaborative, forward-looking settlement mechanisms through national forums like the Xavier Mediation Competition.
  • Sharpen Practice-Ready Skills: To equip future lawyers with industry-level field skills, specifically focusing on complex negotiation, court-craft advocacy, drafting, and interpersonal problem-solving.
  • Bridge Law and Justice: To teach students to recognize the spirit of the law over its mere form, allowing them to clearly understand how systemic legal changes can be leveraged to pave the way for true social justice.
  • Generate Legal Awareness: To organize specialized workshops, national panels, and social campaigns that actively disseminate legal knowledge to the student body and the community at large.
2nd Ignatius Trial and Advocacy Competition (IGNITAC '25)

The 2nd Ignatius Trial and Advocacy Competition (IGNITAC '25) unfolded as a monumental landmark in national courtroom simulations, powered by an elite alliance with Maharatna energy giant Coal India Limited as Presenting Partner and corporate legal powerhouse MCO Legals as Title Partner. With a massive cash prize pool of ₹2.4 Lakhs and coveted corporate internships on the line, IGNITAC '25 set an unprecedented institutional benchmark for student-led academic excellence.

4th Xavier Mediation Competition (XMC '26)

Following that exceptional legacy, the 4th Xavier Mediation Competition (XMC '26) re-established itself as a national pinnacle of alternative dispute resolution. This flagship event was powered by elite tier-one alliances with premier legal giants Fox & Mandal and Khaitan & Co. as Title Partners. Backed by distinguished legal houses like R.L. Dutt & Co., Guha & Co., and VV Law Chambers, the competition challenged top-tier law schools to navigate complex commercial disputes. Offering a massive cash prize pool exceeding ₹3 Lakhs along with coveted corporate internships, XMC '26 set a new benchmark for cross-border mediation excellence.

Building on this competitive rigor, the Xavier Law School (XLS) Intra-Mediation 2026 Competition served as the internal incubator for the university's finest legal talent. The apex of this intra-university battle saw the two best-performing teams earn the elite honor of officially representing our university on the grand national stage at XMC 2026.

Vox Legis Xaveriana Volume I (VLX I)

As a foundation of this training legacy, Vox Legis Xaveriana Volume I (VLX I) was launched under the theme Amicabilis Compositio (Friendly Settlement). Partnering with the renowned mediation organization SettleWiseNow, this pioneer initiative brought together elite practitioners to unpack modern out-of-court settlement dynamics. Serving as a critical educational cornerstone, VLX I laid the perfect training blueprint for the society's subsequent competitive triumphs. This led directly to the Xavier Law School (XLS) Intra-Mediation Competition 2026.
