Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Legal Aid Clinic

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Legal Aid Clinic (DBRALAC) was inaugurated on 25th August 2022 at the St. Xavier's University campus. As a part of the social responsibility of professional legal education, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Legal Aid Clinic (DBRALAC) is established by Xavier Law School (XLS) with the following objectives:

  • Simulation through practical exposure.
  • Connecting law to the community at large. In its essence, DBRALAC is of the students, by the students, for the students; with hand-holding facilities extended by the members of the faculty.

The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Legal Aid Clinic aims to advance the constitutional goal of making the right to free legal aid accessible to the underprivileged sections of the local community in a meaningful manner. At the same time, it serves as a platform for students of Xavier Law School to develop the values of socially responsible lawyering by engaging in legal aid activities and community-based programmes, thereby gaining practical exposure to the functioning of law while contributing to community empowerment.

The Clinic undertakes the responsibilities of conducting the following activities:

  • Promoting legal literacy through outreach programmes, organizing legal awareness camps, and conducting street plays on socio-legal issues. As part of these initiatives, legal awareness camps are organized in villages to educate people about their legal rights, with special emphasis on creating awareness among vulnerable sections of society, including women and children.
  • Pre-litigation services, where assistance is provided to local community members in drafting representations, applications, and legal notices. The Clinic also makes efforts to resolve disputes amicably through mediation and conciliation.
  • Regular visits to correctional homes to interact with inmates and provide guidance regarding the procedures for obtaining free legal aid. During these visits, students conduct face-to-face interactions with inmates, record their concerns, prepare reports based on these interactions, and submit them to the concerned authorities, thereby facilitating communication between inmates and the relevant authorities.
  • Conducting awareness campaigns at the University's Book Fair stall on relevant social and legal issues in order to effectively reach a wider section of the public.
  • Staging Nukaad Nataks on relevant and prominent social issues and portray them to the public in a vernacular language to spread awareness.
  • Conducting gender sensitization and awareness programmes within the University.
  • Conducting training workshops for students in the area of social justice advocacy.
  • Conducting field research on various socio-legal issues.

The Clinic also provides free legal aid services and assistance at the University campus. The timings of the Clinic are as follows:
