Department of Mass Communication
About the Department
One of the vibrant departments of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata starting in 2017, the Department of Mass Communication is the cornerstone of the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies. From the year 2023, the Department of Mass Communication introduced a Four-Year Bachelor of Arts course in Mass Communication (B.A. Hons. in Mass Communication) with Minors in Film Studies and Psychology, in accordance with the guidelines of NEP 2020. In line with the provisions of NEP 2020, the Department has also revised its postgraduate curriculum from 2026 onwards. Students may choose between a two-year (four-semester) M.A. programme and a one-year (two-semester) M.A. programme in Mass Communication, with specializations in Marketing Communication, Digital Video Production, and Artificial Intelligence and Digital Media. The department also started the Ph.D programme in 2019.
Faculty members of this department are well-versed in both theoretical and practical areas and adept at imparting proper training.
The department is equipped with a state-of-the-art production studio including advanced multi-camera set-up, teleprompter, high-tech sound lab and outdoor recording equipment. The postproduction lab is developed with high-end mac machines and updated software.
Classroom work is supplemented by internships, projects, presentations, research, and fieldworks. Each curriculum is designed to produce specialists who can design effective communication content and apply a variety of problem-solving techniques to achieve a broad range of real-world goals.
