Xavier's Society for Science and Innovation

Xavier's Society for Science and Innovation (XSSI) of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, academic excellence, and professional development in fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Cyber security, Business Analytics, and Biostatistics. XSSI envisions a vibrant scientific community dedicated to innovation and knowledge-sharing through events, workshops, and research initiatives. The society functions as an interdisciplinary hub, fostering networking, mentorship, and global collaborations. XSSI's structure consists of a core committee led by a Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and Treasurer from final-year postgraduate students in Computer Science and Statistics, while a working committee includes representatives from all academic years. Admission is based on merit, past experience, and faculty evaluation. The society upholds transparency, accountability, and discipline, with structured impeachment procedures in case of non-compliance. By fostering scientific inquiry and engagement, XSSI aspires to contribute meaningfully to national well-being, upholding the ethos of SXUK and its motto, "nihil ultra" (Nothing Beyond).

One of the primary objectives of the society is to cultivate a culture of research and innovation. Students are motivated to work on projects that address contemporary scientific, technological, and societal issues, often collaborating with faculty members, researchers, and industry experts. XSSI hosts inter-college science and innovation meet
January 16-17, 2026

Xavier Society for Science and Innovation (XSSI) organized a two-day inter-college science and innovation event on January 16-17, 2026 at the university campus. The theme was "The Indian Mosaic: Traditions and Tales."

These events provided an exciting platform for students across the city to engage in creativity, scientific reasoning, data interpretation, technical problem-solving, etc.

Cyber Myths of Kolkata Nights: In this AI art competition, participants reimagined Indian mythological characters as cyberpunk warriors against Kolkata's skyline using generative AI tools. The event was evaluated by Prof. Chiradeep Mukherjee, Prof. Saubhik Bandyopadhyay, and Prof. Debaditya Raychaudhuri. The event aimed to test artistic vision and technical proficiency of students in utilizing generative AI tools to achieve a cohesive theme.

Desi Data Dash: This was a data storytelling and visualization competition that combined analytical thinking with creative narrative-building. Participants performed data exploration, cleaning, visualization, and then presented compelling stories linking insights to the event's cultural theme. Dr. Soumya Banerjee and Mr. Keshav Jhunjhunwala judged the event.

The Cosmic Conference: The academic dimension of the meet was further enriched by a round-table discussion that encouraged thoughtful exchange of ideas. Prof. Suparna Sen and Prof. Jhalak Dutta served as the esteemed judges for the session.

Codemathan: The flagship technical event of XSSI pushed participants through escalating levels of difficulty, testing not just correctness but efficiency, speed, and strategic thinking under pressure. The event was judged by industry experts Mr. Arnab K. Saha, Prof. Aniruddha Choudhuri, and Mr. Arnab Das.

SXUK debuts 'Xenesis 2026' e-magazine

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) launched Xenesis 2026, the first e-magazine of the Faculty of Science on March 28, 2026. Published by the Xavier's Society for Science and Innovation (XSSI), the magazine aims to promote scientific curiosity, creativity, and interdisciplinary engagement within the university community.

Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor of SXUK, while unveiling the e-magazine, praised the endeavour for symbolizing a fresh intellectual beginning. Father Felix Raj said, "I am confident that this magazine will inspire readers to think critically, innovate boldly, and continue contributing to the advancement of knowledge." Drawing a meaningful comparison, Father Felix Raj noted that while Genesis signifies origins, Xenesis captures the essence of "new beginnings" for the university's academic journey. The inaugural volume, themed "Decoding Reality: How Statistics and Algorithms Shape the Modern World," delves into the hidden mathematical and computational frameworks that define modern life.

Xenesis 2026 embodies XSSI's commitment to blending knowledge, technology, and human values, echoing the Xavierian motto Nihil Ultra (Nothing Beyond). The publication stands as a celebration of collaboration, academic excellence, and the intellectual vitality.

XSSI Organized workshop on website development in Collaboration with WordPress Community Kolkata

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) in association with the WordPress Community Kolkata, successfully conducted a Hands-on Workshop on Website Development using WordPress on March 28, 2026 at the university campus. Organized by the Xavier's Society for Science and Innovation (XSSI) and the Department of Computer Science and Statistics, the workshop helped students learn practical web development skills. Around 40 students from the Faculty of Science took part in the workshop. The workshop introduced participants to the WordPress platform, covering its interface, features, and wide-ranging usability. A special segment on career opportunities in web development offered students valuable insights into current industry trends and emerging career paths.

A distinguished panel of resource persons conducted the sessions, including Mr. Subrata Sarkar, Senior Software Engineer; Mr. Subhasis Chatterjee, Digital Content Strategist; Mr. Tristup Ghosh, Software Engineer; Mr. Sudipto Roy, Software Engineer; Mr. Rahul Basu, Product Manager; Mr. Souptik Dutta, Software Engineer; Mr. Kaushal Sikaria, Founder, Rank Rocket Innovations and Ms. Ritika Roy, Content Marketer. Their expertise enriched the programme, making the sessions both informative and engaging.

Participants were also introduced to the basics of web design and mobile app development. A panel discussion on bridging web and mobile development provided real-world perspectives and added depth to the learning experience. The workshop concluded with positive feedback from attendees, marking it as a successful initiative in promoting digital skill development among students at SXUK.
