The Department of Economics at St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, launched in July 2018 with a three-year undergraduate program and a two-year postgraduate program. In June 2020, it expanded to include a Ph.D. program focused on specialized areas of economics.

The department is committed to delivering industry-relevant education, offering updated curricula at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The department adopted the NEP framework at the undergraduate level starting in the 2023–2024 academic year. Beginning in 2026–2027, the framework will also be implemented at the postgraduate level. To stay aligned with contemporary academic trends, the department is introducing a pioneering initiative from the 2026–2027 academic session. Students opting for B.A. (H) in Economics, will now have the option to pursue a Minor in Finance or Data Science, in addition to the existing Minor in Statistics.

The Department is committed to empowering students through every initiative. Students gain hands-on experience with advanced statistical tools, software, and diverse datasets to strengthen their professional skills. Innovative teaching methods and research opportunities further deepen their understanding and spark academic curiosity.

To enrich learning, the department regularly hosts guest lectures, workshops, and training sessions. Events deserving special mention are Annual Summit organized by the department for UG and PG students and Annual Conference organized for research scholars and faculty across the country and abroad every year. These events have been graced by eminent personalities from academia, like Prof Prabhat Patnaik, Prof Jayati Ghosh, Prof Krishnendu Ghosh Dastidar, Prof Pulapre Balakrishnan, Dr Alex M.Thomas, who have enriched the department immensely.

The department is enriched with a team of eight highly dedicated and resourceful faculty members, with Hon’ble Father, Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor of the University, guiding and leading the team. Additionally, an active and dedicated placement committee—comprising faculty and student representatives—ensures strong support for career development and industry connections. Past records show our students being placed at reputed companies like Deloitte, Re-emerging World, Kantar, PwC, Ipsos, Stratmore Wealth, and many more. The Department has a 100% internship record reflecting strong industry engagement.

The department annually conducts field surveys where students of the UG and PG courses participate in collection of primary data, under the guidance of the faculty members. Primary data is collected from a number of households and reports are prepared by the students.

The Department prioritizes the growth and well-being of its students and places student development at the heart of its mission. The Economics Society XAVECOS actively organizes a variety of engaging activities throughout the academic year.

The Department cherishes the achievements of the UG and PG students who have joined various reputed higher education institutions such as IGIDR, IIFT, Madras School of Economics, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune, across the country after passing out.
