St. Xavier's University Film Society

Xavier's University Film Society (Xinephile) is a progressive pedestal dedicated to the appreciation, exploration, and creation of cinema. Established with the vision of fostering a vibrant culture of film literacy and creative expression, the society brings together students from a plethora of academic backgrounds who share a common enthusiasm for the art of storytelling through dynamic images.

As a thriving community of film enthusiasts, cinephiles, aspiring filmmakers, scriptwriters, actors, cinematographers, editors, and visual artists, Xinephile serves as a creative fulcrum where ideas are transformed into captivating narratives. The society encourages students to engage critically with cinema while providing opportunities to develop their artistic, technical, and collaborative skills.

Since its inception in 2020, Xinephile has been committed to exploring the transformative power of cinema as both an artistic medium and a tool for social reflection. The society regularly organizes film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, masterclasses, interactive sessions, film appreciation programmes, and collaborative creative projects in both inter-college and intra-college hemispheres.

Through its commitment to cinematic excellence and creative exploration, Xinephile continues to enrich campus life at St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, inspiring students to look beyond the screen and discover the limitless possibilities of visual storytelling. As a centre for film culture, artistic collaboration, and creative innovation, Xinephile remains dedicated to shaping the next generation of storytellers, filmmakers, and cultural analysts.

Xinephile operates through a well-defined organizational structure that promotes student leadership, creative collaboration, and excellence in filmmaking, cinema appreciation, and cultural activities.

The society functions under the mentorship of the Professor-in-Charge (PIC) and is led by the Secretary, who is supported by the Assistant Secretary and Treasurer. Together, they serve as the principal office bearers responsible for the administration, development, and execution of the society's initiatives. The Core Committee also includes the Assistant Treasurer, PR Head, and Creative Head, who oversee financial management, branding, and creative direction respectively.

Supporting the Core Committee is the Sub-Core Committee, consisting of a Sub-Core Head and dedicated members who assist in coordinating events, projects, and day-to-day operations.

The Working Committee forms the creative backbone of Xinephile, with members contributing across specialized domains such as Research & Development, Script and Content Writing, Event Management, Theatre and Acting, Audio Narration, Cosplay, Graphics and Design, Reel Making, Cinematography, Sponsorship, and Public Relations Management (PRM).

Through this collaborative structure, Xinephile fosters creativity, leadership, filmmaking skills, visual storytelling, and student engagement, making it one of the most dynamic and oldest student-led film societies at St. Xavier's University, Kolkata.

At Xinephile, we believe cinema is more than entertainment—it is a mouthpiece for storytelling, creativity, cultural exchange, and social dialogue. Through our initiatives, we strive to inspire students to explore, create, and engage with the world of films while developing artistic, technical, and leadership skills.

CineMuse'26, a two-day inter-college film festival organised by St. Xavier's University Film Society (XUFS), in collaboration with Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI), was held on April 17-18, 2026 at the university campus. The theme of the event was "Regional Tapestry". The first day featured a panel discussion with cinema professionals like Mr. Atanu Ghosh (National award winning director & Chief Guest), Ms. Mita Chakraborty (Senior faculty, Roopkala Kendro & Guest of Honour), Mr. Premendra Mazumder (Vice President, FFSI) as the panelists. The festival welcomed a plethora of cinematic and creative events on day 2 with screening over 25 carefully curated films, each reflecting diverse perspectives and narratives that resonate with our theme and various events ranging from short film making, audio drama, street play, film review, pitch the plot, film quiz, one-act play. With participation from various colleges like Jadavpur University, Loreto College, Techno India Newtown, Sister Nivedita University, KIIT Bhuvaneshwar, IIEST Shibpur and Asutosh College, CineMuse helped exploration of ideas that deepen our understanding of how regional cinema acts as a powerful agent of change and cultural dialogue.

Xinephile hosted Cine-Sutra'25 on November 3, 2025, at Albert Huart Hall, celebrating the magic of cinema and the spirit of leadership. The event witnessed an enthusiastic gathering of around 100 participants, including dignitaries, volunteers, and students from various departments. The highlight of the day was the Film Quiz Competition, conducted by Mr. Arijit Sen, a brand storyteller and quiz enthusiast. His engaging rounds tested participants' knowledge of film dialogues, visuals, and soundtracks. Thereafter, the Investiture Ceremony took place which recognized the newly appointed committee members and working committee teams for their dedication and service.
