AN INTERACTION WITH ALOKANANDA ROY
The Department of Social Work, St Xavier's University, Kolkata had invited the internationally acclaimed dancer and social initiator, Alokananda Roy for an interactive session with the Post Graduate students of the Departments of Social Work, Mass Communication and English. Ma'am Roy shared her experience of working with the inmates of the correctional homes.
Students and Faculty members listened to her in rapt attention as she spoke about her childhood and school days and her passion for dancing and music. She narrated how from being a stranger to the inmates of the correctional homes, she is now their beloved mother, grandmother and their confidant. She also spoke about how she helped the inmates to transform their lives through music and dance. All watched a documentary on her work with the inmates of correctional homes.
Roy also enlightened the participants on several issues and concerns of the inmates of correctional homes. She urged the students to develop a non-judgemental attitude towards those who get into conflict with law. She emphasised the rehabilitation strategies that need to be adopted for mainstreaming the inmates of correctional homes and in this context insisted for advocacy with different stakeholders like West Bengal State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Corporate Social Responsibilities etc.
The session proved inspiring with valuable insights into a section of society that is often looked down upon.
