LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME FOR STUDENTS

A group of 5 undergraduate students along with the Social Work Programme coordinator of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata attended a 4-day "Leadership and Personality Development Programme" at Matigara in North Bengal between 20-23 September 2018. This programme was organized for the students of Jesuit Institutions from West Bengal and Sikkim by the Jesuit College Principals Association. The objective was to inculcate leadership qualities for overall personality and holistic development of students. The participating institutes included St. Xavier's University (Kolkata), St. Xavier's College; Kolkata, St. Xavier's College, Rajganj (North Bengal), St. Xavier's College, Burdwan, St. Joseph's College; Darjeeling and Loyola College, Namchi.

A list of notable resource persons included Miss Trishala Gurung, a college student from Darjeeling and a mountaineer who had conquered the summit of Everest, in May 2016. There were interactive sessions conducted on various social issues such as human trafficking and plight of plantation workers in the hills of North Bengal. The students learnt about 'Jesuit Charism' and the roles played by St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier - the two founding members of Jesuit Society.

The participants were also taken for an exposure visit to "Jesu Ashram" a home for the destitute. The programme was designed to have interactive games, individual and group presentations, personal sharing and fun activities. The students showed immense enthusiasm and pledged to undertake many such activities in their own institutions when return.
