SXUK organises FDP on effective student mentorship

Father Lafont Centre for Excellence in Research and Innovation (LCERI), St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) organised a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Mentoring and Mentorship of Students” at Fr. Albert Huart Hall, Arrupe Building, on June 30, 2026.

130 faculty members participated in the programme, which focused on strengthening faculty mentoring skills and fostering students’ academic, personal and professional development.

While delivering the inaugural address, Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor, SXUK highlighted the significance of effective mentoring in higher education and relevance of Jesuit charism in nurturing students holistically.

Professor Nilanjana Sanyal, renowned psychoanalyst from University of Calcutta delivered the keynote address. She discussed effective mentoring practices, students’ psychological and emotional needs, ethical mentoring, empathy, trust, communication and active listening. She also highlighted the challenges faced by students and the crucial role of faculty mentors in supporting their overall development.

The interactive session witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members. Participants appreciated the relevance and practical orientation of the FDP. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Soma Sur, Hony. Director, LCERI. Dr. Medha Bhadra Chowdhury compered the programme.
