SXUK celebrates 78th Independence Day
St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) celebrated the 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024 at the university campus in the presence of all Jesuit Fathers, Sisters, faculty members, officers, non-teaching staff members and students.
Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of SXUK hoisted the National Flag while the audience performed the National Anthem collectively.
In his Independence Day speech, Father Raj said, “The 78th Independence Day of India marks the triumph of our nation's struggle for freedom, self-determination, and the ever-alive spirit of our people.”
He continued, “We stand here today, Brothers and Sisters, before the Tiranga and remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, who bravely fought against oppression and injustice. We honour their legacy and the values they instilled in us, as represented by the tricolour – truth, courage, resilience, integrity, harmony and unity.”
Father Raj further added, “The voice of freedom calls us to embrace the diversity that makes our nation strong and to stand up against inequality, injustice, and discrimination. Let us be the change-makers, innovators, entrepreneurs, risk-takers, and problem-solvers, our country needs.”
While concluding, Father Raj advised, “Let us recommit ourselves to the principles of justice, equality, and freedom. Let us work together to build a nation where every individual has access to quality education, opportunities, and the chance to succeed.”
The celebration was followed by a high tea. Mr. Mario Martin Louis was the coordinator of the entire programme.
