Magis Mantra: A Testament to Excellence and Compassion
The biography of Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK), was launched on August 26, 2025, at the university campus, coinciding with the 115th birth anniversary of St. Teresa of Calcutta. The event was graced by dignitaries, university employees, alumni, and students.
In his biography, Father Felix Raj emphasizes the importance of envisioning Indian higher education within the broader context of culture, highlighting pluralism and secularism. Dr. Prabhat Kumar Datta, an adjunct professor at Xavier Law School, SXUK, meticulously researched and penned the biography over one and a half years.
During the launch, Father Felix Raj shared his decision to collaborate with Dr. Datta, stating, "Before Prof. Datta expressed his interest, two other reputed publishers approached me with the same appeal. However, I declined, as they sought to include controversial discussions for commercial gain."
He emphasized the importance of inspiration in writing a book, saying, "There should be no other agenda than inspiring people, especially the younger generation."
The book, Magis Mantra, features a foreword by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and is a testament to the Jesuit motto of excellence and compassion. The biography is divided into ten chapters, detailing Father Felix Raj's life, from his childhood memories in Tamil Nadu to his transformative years as a Jesuit, his bond with Mother Teresa, and his vision for St. Xavier's University.
The launch event was attended by esteemed guests, including Rev. Dr. James Arjen Tete, S.J., Chancellor of SXUK; Mr. Javed Khan, Minister of Disaster Management; and Prof. Suranjan Das, Vice-Chancellor of Adamas University, among others. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a high tea.
