Posted on: August 02, 2020

Xinephile, the Film Society of St. Xavier's University, organized a webinar on the 18th of July, 2020, on Microsoft Teams. The topic of discussion was "Indian Film Industry: Challenges and Opportunities Post CoVID-19".. The panel of speakers consisted of five esteemed people from the film industry like Director Rahul Rawail, Producer Amit Khanna, Film critic and screen writer Saibal Chatterjee, Producer and Director Arindam Sil, President of Film Federation of India Firdausul Hasan. The speakers shared their opinions, experiences and observations about the various possibilities as to where the largest film industry of the world is headed once the fog of this crisis has cleared.

The matters addressed through the course of the discussion were about OTT platforms, that cinema and the new technology share a confrontational relationship; the regional cinema and how they contribute to the overall scenario; and that cinema is not just a darkened auditorium to watch films, but is an experience in itself. One cannot do away with theatres, because they are essential to the film viewing experience in general, but with the coming of new technologies, the content may change according to the mediums in which the respective content is set of release. The experience can keep changing but the art of storytelling will remain the same.

Cinema is an art form, it is the art of storytelling which will prevail and find new ways to create and deliver. Cinema talks about life, and life is ever changing. Therefore, just as life evolves, so will cinema.
- Dr. Reshmi Naskar, Assistant Professor of Mass Communication.
