The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) successfully organised two-day Academic, Administration and Leadership Development Programme on June 18 - 19, 2026. The programme brought together eminent academicians, administrators and policymakers to deliberate on leadership, ethics and the evolving challenges facing higher education institutions.

Delivering the inaugural session, Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor of SXUK highlighted the Jesuit ideals of cura personalis (care for the whole person), magis (the pursuit of excellence) and discernment as the cornerstones of transformative leadership. He emphasised that effective academic leadership must balance institutional growth with human values.

In the subsequent session, Dr. Peppin Soosai discussed ethical decision-making in higher education, stressing that leadership should be guided by values rather than merely institutional norms. 

Addressing the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements, Prof. Basab Chaudhuri spoke on the impact of artificial intelligence, digital transformation and changing educational paradigms. 

Former parliamentarian and administrator Mr. Jawhar Sircar presented conflict as a constructive force that, when managed effectively, can foster institutional growth. He highlighted the significance of dialogue, negotiation and balancing diverse interests within academic institutions.

Prof. Anirban Mazumdar emphasised the need for transparency, accountability and adherence to constitutional values in educational leadership. His session focused on strengthening institutional governance through ethical and responsible administrative practices.

Speaking on the future of universities, Prof. (Dr.) Suranjan Das examined the impact of globalisation, technological disruption and evolving industry expectations. 

The concluding technical session by Dr. Debajyoti Konar explored the transition from administrative responsibilities to academic leadership, highlighting challenges related to institutional autonomy, funding mechanisms and regulatory frameworks.

Delivering the valedictory address, Father Felix Raj reiterated the distinction between management and leadership, observing that while management focuses on administration, leadership demands vision, adaptability and an unwavering commitment to ethical values.
