Academic development is highly necessary for holistic growth of the country, these words were reaffirmed by Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj S.J, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) while celebrating the 74th Republic Day of India in the University premises on January 26, 2023.

Amid the presence of faculty members, non-teaching staff members and students, Father Raj hoisted the National Flag and delivered the Republic Day speech. Citing the rich cultural ethos of the nation, he stressed on strengthening the bonhomie and cooperation more among the citizens of the country.

Giving reference to the economic development of the country, Father Raj said that the country’s present GDP stands at US$ 3.8 trillion and the government hopes to make it US$ 5 trillion by 2030.

Focusing his concerns on the inclusion of more students in higher education, Father Raj stated that only 24% students have enrolled in higher education institutions till now in India, which is lower than many western nations. He appreciated the plans of national government to increase it upto 50% by 2035.

He further said that both public and private universities of this country should play a constructive role in fulfilling the objectives. Out of 1070 universities, there are right now 430 private universities in the country who have been contributing for the educational development of the nation, he added.

He also stressed on building a positive attitude in everyone to make the nation ‘strong to stronger’.
