St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) celebrated the 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025 at the university campus. The celebration began with the hoisting of the National Flag by Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor of SXUK infront of the Britto House amid the august presence of Jesuit Fathers, Sisters, Officers, faculty members, non-teaching staff, alumni members and students, followed by the chanting of the National Anthem collectively.

While delivering the Independence Day speech, Father Felix Raj said, “India is progressing to be a fully developed nation by 2047 through the Viksit Bharat programme. Every citizen of the country should do their best to make the country progress towards its goal. SXUK, being a hub of academic excellence, has been contributing to the development of the nation by making men and women for others.”

He further added, “The constitution of India speaks of giving respect to pluralism and secularism. India is the only nation across the world which practices multilingual and multicultural values. The future generation should follow the legacy.”

Mr. Rajesh Chirimar, Member, Mayor-in-Council, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation was the Chief Guest. While delivering his speech, Mr. Chirimar said, “Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of Nation taught us to follow tolerance and non-violence. We believe in the equality of every citizen and the same makes India proud.”

The programme ended with a cultural performance by the students and a refreshment. Mr. Mario Martin Louis was the emcee.
