INDUCTION AT ST. XAVIER'S UNIVERSITY

On the 7th of July 2018, a lively induction programme was held at the Rajarhat campus for the new batch of students of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata.

The programme was held in three sessions for three different faculties of students:the first session was for B. Com and B.M.S students, the second for the B.A students of Economics, Mass Communication and English Departments and the third for all Postgraduate students respectively. There are around 600 freshers this year. The programme began with a short and solemn inter faith prayer video.

The Vice-Rector and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Fr Sebasti Raj commenced the proceedings with a warm welcome speech. He highlighted the motto of St. Xavier's, 'Nihil Ultra' meaning 'Nothing Beyond', which calls students to aspire for excellence in all that they do. He also entreated the students to honour and uphold the values of the Society of Jesus on which this institute is based, invoking them to render themselves at the service of society, by being "men and women for others".

The Vice Chancellor, Fr Felix Raj, delivered the inaugural address. He joyfully welcomed the students and gave an inspiring address to orient the students towards the emblem of excellence that Xavier's upholds. He christened the freshers as Xaverians and inducted them into the Xaverian family and encouraged them to follow the footsteps of the renowned Xavierians of the past. Father entreated the students to strive to achieve 'Magis' and do everything for "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" the Latin phrase meaning "for the greater glory of God".

Father Vice Chancellor, who graciously thanked the editorial team that was instrumental in its publication, released the first issue of the University magazine, "Xaverianum".

The Registrar, Prof. Ashish Mitra informed the students of the high standards expected of them as Xavierians and explained the various rules and regulations of the University to help them achieve their goals. The Dean of Commerce and Management, Dr. Soma Sur and the Dean of Arts and Social Studies, Fr. Soosai Nayagam delivered the vote of thanks respectively.

The programme concluded with a melodious musical performance by the second-year students and a short video of the University's Inauguration ceremony.
