Department of Mass Communication of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) organised a workshop on “Skill of News Packaging” on August 12, 2026 at the university campus. 

The resource person was Tahir Abbas from Times Now, Delhi. He discussed process of transforming complex information and stories into simple, concise and direct narratives for television audiences. He narrated the conceptualisation and structure of a half-hour news bulletin, explained how individual stories are selected, organised and presented within a limited timeframe.

Abbas explained key aspects of editorial decision-making and gatekeeping, production and control, roles of technical and field crews. His real-life examples helped students understand the coordination and precision required to produce a television news bulletin. The workshop was highly interactive and included several practical examples.
