Department of Mass Communication hosts session on Science Journalism
In a bid to acknowledge students on growth and nature of Science Journalism in Indian media scenario, the Department of Mass Communication, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) organized a special session on November 9, 2022 for its postgraduate students.
Named as ‘Science Journalism and its dynamics’, it was conducted by Dr. Manas Pratim Das, a Programme Producer of All India Radio, Kolkata office. Dr. Das spoke on various avenues of Science Journalism and gave references to several reputed science journals like ‘Scientific American’, ‘Dream47’ and publications by Vigyan Prasar.
He discussed the scientific heritage of the country narrating how Jamsethji Tata had established the Indian Institute of Science as advised by Swami Vivekananda. He also narrated about interesting tangent of science in movies namely ‘Erin Brokovich’ (2000) and ‘Interstellar’ (2014), especially on its portrayal of black holes.
Dr. Das had also mentioned the popularity of science journalism in the cyber space with sites like popsci.com and vigyanprasargov.in. Students found the session highly informative and engaging.
