Social Outreach : Credit Programme
Service-Learning is a mandatory experiential learning component of the Undergraduate Curriculum as outlined by the National Education Policy (2020), designed to enable students to engage meaningfully with society while applying academic learning in real-life contexts.
Main features:
- It is a mandatory course for all the students enrolled in the Undergraduate Programmes except Xavier Law School.
- This is a 2-credit course consisting of both theory and practical components undertaken by 1st or 2nd Semester UG Students.
- Students undertake 30 hours of practical work.
- Students are taken to nearby adopted villages of the University namely Kathalberia, Kulberia, Dharmatala Pachuria, Beonta and Hatishala in the Beonta 2 Panchayat of Bhangar II Block, South 24 Parganas district for supplementary teaching programmes and other various social outreach activities.
- Some students are assigned to city-based NGOs (from the approved list) for exposure to the urban slums and its challenges.
- Students need to appear for 15 lectures and clear the theory examination at the end of the semester to complete the course.
- A student will not be awarded a degree without the completion of required practical and theory components of the course.
At SXUK, the CSOP has been entrusted with the overall responsibility of ensuring effective implementation of the 2-credit Non-Academic Credit Programme for Xavier Law School UG Students in compliance with standards being specified by the authority.
Main features:
- Out of 2 Non-Academic credits, a minimum of 1 credit is to be completed through social service / outreach programme under the supervision of the Centre for Social Outreach Programme (CSOP).
- Every student is encouraged to spend a minimum of 30 hours (over a five-year period) to contribute to various social outreach activities which are conducted in nearby adopted villages and inside the University campus.
- The other Non-Academic Credit (Co-Curricular/Extra-Curricular) credit is also equivalent to 30 hours.
- It can be earned through participation in the activities of Social Service / Outreach Programmes, Sports, activities of different societies in the University and others as specified by the University from time to time.
- A student will not be awarded a degree without the completion of required Non-Academic credits.
