In an effort to commemorate women’s struggles, encourage gender equity and awareness of women’s rights in the workplace, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) celebrated the International Women’s Day, 2024 at the university campus on March 9, 2024.

Prof Swati Ghosh, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) was the Chief Guest in this programme. V Solomon Nesakumar, Additional Commissioner, Kolkata Police and Dr. Payel Rai Chowdhury Dutt, Department of Human Rights, RBU were the Guests of Honour.

Prof Ashis Mitra, Registrar of SXUK delivered the welcome address emphasizing the importance of gender equity in workplace.

While delivering the lecture entitled ‘Corporeality in/as work’, Prof. Ghosh shed light on the complex relationship between gender, body, and labour.

Mr. Nesakumar delivered an insightful speech on the importance of self- defence for girls and highlighted the need for women to be empowered to protect themselves and stand up against violence and discrimination. He also distributed the certificates to a few female students of SXUK on the successful completion of their Unarmed Defence Training Course conducted by Kolkata Police in the university campus earlier. He Dr. Rai Chowdhury Dutt said that women’s rights encompass the rights of one half of humanity. She deliberated on understanding gender issues in the workplace.
