Dept of Mass Communication hosts Xavtalk
Department of Mass Communication of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) organised an insightful intra-departmental group discussion, Xavtalk on October 19, 2024 at the university campus. The topic was ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Job Automation.’
The event aims to promote student-led discussions on contemporary issues, furthering their understanding of how technological advancements are transforming industries worldwide.
Swastika Roy of BA in Mass Communication, Semester 3 emerged as the best speaker. She argued that while AI would displace certain jobs, it would still fail to replace human compassion and integrity which are integral parts of carrying out certain other jobs.
The other two rank holders were Aafia Mujtaba Khanam and Sanjana Malhotra, students from third and first semesters respectively. Aafia emphasised lack of soft skills in the functions of AI and Sanjana focused on the history of AI and its long-standing impact on the human psyche and social disparity since the 1800s.
Three other students also participated as speakers in this event. The event concluded with insightful remarks from the judges, Dr. Manali Bhattacharya, Dr. Medha Bhadra Chowdhury, and Dr. Rupa Biswas. Dr. Somak Sen coordinated the entire event.
