New Town/Kolkata (17 March 2026): The department of Social Work, SXUK observed and celebrated World Social Work Day today 17 March 2026 with the theme ‘Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society’, which ‘highlights the vital role of social work in bringing people together across communities, cultures, and systems to shape a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow’ (IFSW, 2026). The department organised a number of activities like poster making, drawing a picture using other parts of the body than hands, skit performance on the theme of inclusivity, a blind walk, singing, short film presentation and a recitation of poetry titled The Heart Bridge composed by Dipita Mitra (MSW-IV) that described a social worker as –

They do not wear capes,but they bring the light
Into the dark corners,making them bright
With “Harambee”-the calling to pull together
They mend broken bonds, weathering the weather

A hand for the lonely, a voice for the weak,
They bring the hope that the desperate seek
From fragmented stories,a future they weave
Giving us dignity-giving us room to believe

So celebrate the patient, the brave and the kind
Who build a new harmony, leaving no one behind

It is about ‘Co-building Hope and Harmony’

So in today we gather to honor the unsung heroes who work on emotional frontline-social workers. The 2026 theme calls on us to adopt Harambee-a Swahili term for “pulling together”. Social work is not merely a profession, it is the compassionate act of weaving solidarity through fragmented communities.

Today we recognise ourselves by putting in certain roles:
…. bringing people together across cultures and systems
…. working with individuals and families to build resilence
…. creating a sustainable world where dignity is a right,not a priviledge

Let us celebrate our unwavering dedication in turning empathy into action, ensuring that hope is not just a dream, but a shared reality.
