Candidates who have Master's degree from a UGC recognized University or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed.
Or
Equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution. However, in all such cases Association of Indian Universities (AIU) equivalence will be required.
Or
M.Phil. ( before 2024) in relevant discipline with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. However, for the degrees obtained from foreign Universities, Association of Indian Universities (AIU) equivalence will be required.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade in Master's degree / M.Phil. programme may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/ Differently Abled (Divyangjan) categories.
The candidate will have to appear in the St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata Research Entrance Test (XU- RET). The duration of the XU-RET will be of two hours and will comprise of 50 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) of 2 marks each with a total of 100 marks for all Ph.D. programmes. Test will have two sections 50 marks (25 questions) for each.

Mode of XU-RET:
St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata Research Entrance Test (XU-RET) will be held in offline mode, and the candidate will be required to come to the University campus for the test.
No TA/DA will be paid for appearing in the XU-RET.
Mode of Interview:
Interview will be held physically, and the candidate will be required to come to the University Campus.
No TA/DA will be paid for appearing in the Interview.
Note: It is mandatory for working applicants to submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in the given format, from the current employer at the time of admission.
Total Annual Fees: ₹1,00,000/-
The annual fees are to be paid in two equal instalments. 1st & 2nd instalment of annual fees of ₹ 50,000/- for each semester to be paid before the commencement of each semester.
Fees to be paid at the time of admission: 1st instalment of annual fees of Year 1 (₹ 50,000/-) and ₹ 10,000/- (Refundable Security Deposit). Candidates may also opt to pay two instalments together.
