About the Department
Contemporary society is plagued with numerous social problems which require professional interventions. Social work is a profession that is committed to the well-being of society, promotes social change, solves problems pertaining to human relationships and empowers and liberates people from oppression and marginalization. Recognizing the acute shortage of social workers in eastern India and specially in West Bengal, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, with its goal of 'reaching the unreached' started the Master of Social Work (MSW) course in 2017. At present the Department offers a two-year postgraduation programme only. Social Work education provided by St. Xavier's University; Kolkata will set international standards relevant to the contemporary era. It will inculcate the students with practical experience, ushering in intellectual, social and cultural transformation in them. The MSW programme is devised to develop professionals to work in the field of human development and welfare. The Department will orient students about socio-economic realities and developmental issues and prepare them to address problems related to rights, development, gender and such other aspects. Students will be trained in planning, mobilizing resources, managing development/welfare organizations, engaging in research, policy studies and policy-formulation
