26 Aug 2019
St. Xavier's University, Kolkata organised its first Blood Donation Camp on 26th of August 2019. It was organised in the memory of St. Teresa of Calcutta on her 109th birth anniversary. Mother Teresa was a humanitarian known for her acts of charity towards the marginalised sections of the society.
The camp was organised by the Department of Social Work and Xaverians in Action (XIA) in collaboration with the Association of Voluntary Blood Donors, West Bengal. The students were very enthusiastic to celebrate the day with lots of joy as it was also the birthday of our Honourable Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor along with other dignitaries of the University. Father also delivered an inspiring speech on the importance of blood donation and long standing and firm resolution towards the cause by Xaverians.
There were three blood banks which participated in the Camp, namely R.G. Kar Hospital, National Blood Bank and Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. The event ended on a happy note as the Department of Social Work and XIA announced a total of 348 donors.
There was also a seminar on Life Saving Skills conducted by Vivo Health Care Institute on the steps taken to perform CPR and precautionary measures to undertake in case of choking as the volunteers of the Blood Donation Camp were called up on stage for a live demonstration. The Seminar was attended by more than 250 students of the University.
Due to the enthusiastic response of our students, our VC announced to host the Blood Donation Camp as an annual event on the 26th August every year.
