Message from Vice-Chancellor

Message - March 2025
I extend warm greetings to our faculty, other members of the staff, students, and stakeholders. As a Jesuit institution, our university serves as a sanctuary of knowledge, compassion, and spiritual growth.

We embody the timeless principles of St. Ignatius of Loyola: cura personalis (care for the whole person), magis (pursuit of excellence), and service to others. These principles inspire our mission to foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and commitment to social justice.

Guided by the principles of Jesuit education, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata nurtures holistic growth, cultivating empathetic leaders who enrich society. Our university's rich history ignites like a flame, sparking countless others, illuminating minds and transforming lives.

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, has made significant strides in academic innovation and global collaboration. In accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and State Education Policy (SEP) 2023 guidelines, we introduced a 4-year undergraduate degree programme from 2023-24 session. This reform aligns with emerging global education trends, fostering holistic student development. Our faculty members and students have enthusiastically embraced these changes, demonstrating adaptability and commitment to academic excellence.

In 2024, SXUK expanded its international partnerships by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with several prestigious institutions. These agreements pave the way for academic exchange, research collaboration, and cultural diversity, enhancing opportunities for our students and faculty.

On February 8, 2025, we proudly marked the 9th Foundation Day of our esteemed institution. Since our inception in 2017, we have navigated numerous challenges and achieved steady growth in teaching, learning, research, and publications, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to academic excellence As of January 2025, St. Xavier's University proudly supports a vibrant academic community of 3,840 students across various programs, 129 faculty members, 25 Officers,100 support staff, alongside 150 research scholars pursuing Ph.D. in diverse disciplines.

Embracing 'SXUK Vision 2030', we envision expanding our student body to 10,000 by 2030, emerging as a premier higher education institution in India, renowned for academic excellence, innovative research, and holistic formation as men and women for others.

St. Xavier's University celebrated its 6th Convocation Ceremony on February 15, 2025, at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, New Town. Mr. Justice I.P. Mukerji, Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and delivered the convocation address.

The university conferred the Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) on Dr. G. Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor of VIT University. A total of 844 students received their degree qualifying certificates. Additionally, 48 medal recipients were honored with gold, silver, and bronze medals. Five research scholars were conferred Ph.D. degrees.

The academic year 2024-25 marked a significant milestone for hostel residents at St. Xavier's University, as the hostels continued to provide a nurturing environment reminiscent of home. A notable highlight was the establishment of the "G-16" Students' Committee, which revitalized hostel activities with innovative initiatives, fostering increased student engagement.

Parallel to these developments, SXUK consistently upgraded academic and infrastructural facilities. Our commitment to practical learning led to the creation of cutting-edge facilities, including: a state-of-the-art Mac Lab, two general labs, one communication lab and an advanced audio-visual studio.

Together, we face global complexities with courage, creativity, and empathy. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative research, we tackle pressing issues. We celebrate diversity, promote equity, and welcome individuals from all backgrounds. Our campus remains a safe space for open dialogue and spiritual exploration.

Our admission process for the academic session 2025-26 is now underway. The application portals for MBA, MBA (Executive), and all other postgraduate courses are open. The undergraduate admission process will commence shortly after the announcement of the Plus 2 results. For detailed information and updates, please visit our University website. We look forward to welcoming you to our academic community!

As we journey forward, I invite you to pursue academic excellence with integrity, cultivate meaningful relationships, engage in service and advocacy, and deepen your spiritual growth. May our shared values guide us always.

Thank you for your trust in Jesuit ideals. May we be filled with wisdom, compassion, and joy.

Nihil Ultra! God bless all of us.

Message - March 2024
On behalf of the St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK), I extend my best wishes to all of you, faculty, staff, students, parents, alimni/ae and well-wishers for the New Year 2024.

This year, we have celebrated the eighth foundation day of the university on February 10. Starting in 2017, we have passed these years overcoming many challenges. We have expanded and have been growing steadily in terms of teaching and learning, research and publications.

Presently, a total of 3477 students are on roll in the university. There are 126 research scholars who are pursuing their Ph.D. programmes under different disciplines. We believe that in near future, SXUK will emerge as the first destination hub for those who aspire to achieve knowledge and success in life. As per ‘SXUK Vision 2030’, the university hopes to have 10,000 students on its rolls.

We celebrated the fifth Convocation Ceremony on February 6, 2024 at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, New Town. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, former Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary General for “Sustainable Energy for All” was the Chief Guest. With his consent, he has been appointed the Honorary Global Ambassador for Peace.

I am proud to announce that in this convocation, 889 students were awarded with their degree qualifying certificates. There were 37 medal recipients who were awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals. The first Ph.D degree of the university was also awarded in this convocation to one of our research scholars of the Department of Commerce.

In this convocation, we conferred the Doctor of Science (D.Sc, Honoris Causa) on Rev. Dr. S. Ignacimuthu, S.J., a noted Bio-scientist, and the Doctor of Law (LL.D, Honoris Causa) on Mr. R N Jhunjhunwala, a renowned jurist and Attorney-at-Law.

From the current session 2023-24, we have introduced the 4-year undergraduate programme w.e.f. July 2023 following the NEP 2020 and SEP 2023 guidelines. This has been done in keeping with the emerging trends in global education. We have found warm response from our faculty members and students while implementing the new changes in academic curriculum.

In 2023, SXUK signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the New Town Kolkata Green Smart City Corporation Limited (NKGSCCL) aiming to make it an ideal smart city. This MoU will help both SXUK and NKGSCCL to share expertise and resources in developing New Town as a smart city through collaborative efforts.

The areas in which both SXUK and NKGSCCL will jointly work are establishment of Bee Corridor at Eco Park, Radio New Town, Smart Library, Day Care Centre, case studies on Fuljhuri under Project Impact base and strategy for development of Eco Park under macro impact case study.

We have also signed another MoU with Webel as a part of Industry-Academia collaboration. Students of SXUK may use laboratories and other facilities at Webel for existing courses. New undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in collaboration with Webel are in the pipeline.

New skill-enhancement courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in collaboration with Webel are being designed. Short Term certificate courses, diploma courses, Faculty Development Programmes and student workshops may be offered by SXUK in collaboration with Webel. Students would also get opportunity to work on live-projects during their internship. There will also be placement opportunities for them in future.

We have also signed an MoU with ‘Child Rights and You’ (CRY) in 2023. The collaboration will enrich experiential learning of our students and encourage them to work for public service and other social works.

Hostel life in SXUK is always pulsating with energy and enthusiasm. The university presently has residential facilities for 900 students in its two hostels – 300 for boys and 600 for girls.

SXUK has been constantly enhancing academic as well as infrastructural facilities. Hostel students can use the Fr. Aruppe Central Library till 10:00 p.m. and have access to a wide range of both online and offline resources on campus to help them cope with their academic needs.

We have a strong placement cell which has been working effectively to provide suitable opportunities to our students in getting placed in various reputed national and multinational organisations.

Infrastructurally, we have offered our students the best mode of practical learning. We have a robust Mac Lab, a Window version Lab and a state-of-the-art audio-visual studio where our students are imparted hands-on training by competent professionals to meet the needs of industry.

We are the pioneers in introducing the National Academic Depository (NAD), the online store house of all marksheets and certificates of degrees and diplomas in digitised format and the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) in this state. This will help our students to meet the global requirements whenever and wherever they want to utilize the same.

To encourage active participation in sports and games, we have also announced two best sportsperson scholarships for the best athletes in both men and women categories from the Annual Sports Day 2024. The different cultural societies of the university always keep the students engaged in a plethora of academic and cultural activities on campus throughout the year.

The Alumni Association is well organized and SXUK is a case study for alumni participation in all its activities and developments. St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association has been given a new spacious office in the Loyola Tirtha.

While the Xavier Business School organised its annual fest ‘Xaviesta’, the Students’ Board of the university celebrated the ‘Xavrang 2024’, the annual cultural fest of the university with great pomp and ceremony in February 2024. It witnessed the participation of not only the students of SXUK, but also students from other colleges and universities.

Our faculty members and support staff members have been relentlessly working for the overall development of the university. We have organized several seminars and conferences in the last one year to make our students aware of the recent trends in research activities.

Once again, I express my best wishes for a meaningful and fruitful career for all of you. May God bless all of us and guide our steps.

One more year has elapsed. We have experienced and witnessed many new things in the last year. Every new experience has emboldened us to move forward with a positive attitude to meet new goals and our inclusive steps have enabled us to achieve our objectives successfully.

Keeping in mind the growing demand of professional courses, our University has started three new academic programmes last year – M.Sc in Computer Science, M.Sc in Statistics, and BA (Hons.) in Psychology. With this, St. Xavier’s University Kolkata (SXUK) presently runs 17 courses in different disciplines.

We celebrated the fourth Convocation ceremony on February 6, 2023. We feel proud to announce that a total of 770 students received their degree completion certificates in this grand ceremony. There were 33 medal recipients who achieved distinction in their respective disciplines.

We conferred the D.Litt (Honoris Causa) on Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal this year in the presence of Dr. C. V. Ananda Bose, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal. The University honoured her with the highest academic title for her contribution to the development of higher education in the state.

Our university is growing every year. More than 3000 students are on the roll presently. In research as well, SXUK has made substantial advancement. A total of 93 research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D programmes.

The hard work of the faculty members and guidance provided to our students reflect in their success in different spheres of lives.

We are progressing in terms of infrastructural development as well. Two new 11-storeyed buildings are being built in the campus, one of which will house the academic activities and the other will be the second girls’ hostel with 300 seats. At present, there are hostel facilities available for 600 students – 300 for boys and 300 for girls.

Life at the SXUK hostels is always exciting. It teaches you to live in a community. It teaches you the skills of corporate life and creates a sense of support and cooperation among students. While you are in the hostel, it helps you to meet new people and encounter new cultures and traditions. Hostel life is a union of diverse cultures and upbringings, which blends into a harmony for a rich and memorable experience.

According to our ‘Vision 2030’, we are hopeful to have 10000 students on the rolls. We have already been able to leave a mark in the arena of higher education through our quality teaching in the academic sphere.

Besides academics, our University has been continuing to work for the development of the underprivileged and distressed sections of the society. We believe in ‘Cura Personalis’ (care for persons) and give individual space to grow in character and to prepare ‘men and women for others’. This is the hallmark of Jesuit Education and legacy.

We encourage you to lead a disciplined life and imbibe a sense of belongingness and togetherness to make a home away from home. We help you to shape these values that are the life-foundations to your career growth and success.

Once again, I extend a warm welcome to our students who have chosen this institution as a step to build their future. I equally congratulate their guardians who have agreed to send their beloved children to this institution and have taken up responsibility to make their career stronger.

SXUK will continue to provide its best to promote holistic development based on Ignatian charism. May our Patron Saint Francis Xavier abundantly bless and constantly guide our steps.

May God bless all of us. Nihil Ultra!

Black days are over. God has been kind to all of us! We have become able to resume the normal academic process with the blessings of the Almighty. Our aims and objectives can now be performed with unperturbed agility. Students and teachers are back on campus that has rejuvenated the academic atmosphere again.

During the pandemic, we continued our online academic process so that the future and career of our students would not be compromised. As soon as the situation started to turn normal, we too started to conduct classes regularly in offline mode in a phased manner. Our students and their guardians wholeheartedly welcome the revival.

We have conducted the semester examinations in offline mode so that the sanctity of examination and evaluation would be maintained appropriately. The cent percent presence of the students in offline examination denotes their wishes to come back into the mainstream of life again.

The pandemic could not dull our spirits and halt our progress towards the attainment of excellence. We have completed our admission processes for PG and UG courses successfully. Newcomers visited the campus along with their guardians and enjoyed the serene beauty of the campus.

We have been successful in conducting the MBA Semester Examinations of 2021-22 in offline mode and published their results. We have also conducted the Semester Examinations of 2021-22 for all UG and PG students in offline mode. All examinations including the practical examinations have been completed on time according to our almanac.

Welcome to our Freshers
I christen you, Freshers, into the spirit and culture of the Xaverian family and warmly welcome you to St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata.

I am sure that within the next few years you will experience the Xaverian excellence that shall be a part of you ever after. In this Jesuit university, you will not only be the recipient of a world-class education that has been tried and tested for over five centuries, but you will also feel proud to be transformed into leaders of tomorrow – being men and women for others. You will learn to transcend all the debilitating barriers that may be placed in your path. The University will open up horizons for you that had hitherto remained unknown and unexplored.

500th Year of Cannonball Moment
2021-22 marks the 500th year of St. Ignatius’ ‘cannonball moment’ - a moment of inner transformation from being a soldier of an earthly King to a soldier of Christ. Out of these events was born the world-wide Jesuit Order or the Society of Jesus, which has for five centuries dedicated itself to provide quality education to millions of people across the globe irrespective of religion, region, race, caste, colour, gender, physical conditions and all other hindrances.

As Jesuit General Arturo Sosa has said, ‘The whole year will be guided by the Universal Apostolic Preferences which, as you know, were announced in 2019 and continue until 2029. We know that assimilating them means conversion for each one of us, for our communities, our institutions and our apostolic works. We ask for the grace of a real change in our day-to-day life and mission’.

On December 11 & 12, 2021, the University organised a two-day International Conference to celebrate the Ignatian Year 2021-2022 to observe the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The theme of the conference was ‘Integrating Ignatian Pedagogy into Research and Practice’. The conference witnessed huge presence of academicians and research scholars across the country, who presented research papers as well.

Keeping this in mind, the University is observing the Ignatian Year from May 20, 2021. It will conclude on July 31, 2022, the Feast Day of Ignatius of Loyola. Numerous programmes have been chalked out and conducted to spread the message and charism of Ignatius and the Jesuits.

Once again, I extend a warm welcome to our freshers. May our Patron Saint Francis Xavier abundantly bless and constantly guide our steps.

May God bless all of us. Nihil Ultra!

As I always say that it is a divine work to establish and administer this Jesuit University, I have found that we have been universally helped by the Almighty every time. Since beginning, we have been receiving cooperation from noble hearts at various capacities. The journey has been good so far despite all challenges.

St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, within a very short span of time has appeared to be the first choice for those who are desirous of getting value-based education. We are having students from different corners of the nation which helps us to strengthen the pluralistic realities of the nation.

During the pandemic period, regular online classes have been conducted and examinations were held in timely manner. Once situation started to normalize, adhering to all protocols related to prevention of COVID-19 pandemic, we first started offline classes from February 7, 2022 with the postgraduate and Ph.D.sections and then we called back our undergraduate students from February 28, 2022.

The campus is vibrant with smiles as students started coming into the campus everyday. Teachers as well become more enthusiastic as they have been able to get back to the normal classroom mode of teaching–learning. We have meticulously planned our curriculum on time based on the UGC guidelines and have been able to provide the very best to our stakeholders.

St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, being a Jesuit University with its motto of ‘Nihil Ultra’ (Nothing Beyond), promotes an interreligious approach in the context of multi-religious, multicultural and multilinguistic realities of India. We aim to form global leaders for today and tomorrow to create a better world. To us here, every student is a burning candle, that lits up other candles.

Xaverian motto ‘Nihil Ultra’ means without limits, infinite and unending. They reflect the spirit of our lives, the rhythm of our universe, the vision of our minds, the hymn of our compassion, the depth of our hearts. It also means development, advancement and betterment as only these are without limit.

We emphasize on social involvement of every student in the life and spirit of this country. We follow the footsteps of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, who believed in making every educational institution as the temple of knowledge and wisdom. We always strive to live upto it. The Jesuits arguably impart the best known education in our country. Our educational initiative is the largest global initiative. Our values and strategies flow from the Ignatian charism and rich legacy.

We are presently offering nineteen programs under four major disciplines viz, Arts and Social Sciences, Management, Commerce and Law. Under the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies, the University offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs in English, Mass Communication and Economics. We are also offering Master of Social Work (MSW) and M.A. in Psychology as part of Arts and Social Science faculty. From the new session, we are about to commence M.Sc. in Computer Science and Statistics and also M.A. in Philosophy.

As you know, a University is the seat of higher education, our University boasts of having more than 86 research scholars in its roll in various disciplines of Commerce, Management, Economics, English and Mass Communication.

The New Education Policy 2020 aims to pave the path for major transformational reforms in the entire higher education sector. We believe that the NEP 2020 will develop the education scenario of the country which in turn will make India a global superpower in education ensuring excellence equity, access, employability and inclusion of all segments of society.

As a Jesuit University, we are focusing on quality outcomes in access, pedagogy, research, consultancy and innovation in education, enrolment of students and their employability. This University reaches out to everyone, thus maintaining the vision of equity. We are in the process of continuously augmenting our infrastructure with adding new buildings, sports facilities, cafeteria, state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratory, and library. We believe that we shall be able to reach our goals through constructive outcomes and academic leadership.

May God continue to bless all of us. Nihil Ultra!

During the pandemic period, regular online classes have been conducted and examinations were held in timely manner. In this ‘new normal’ situation, our faculty and staffs members are committed to provide best education to our students.

In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic appeared as one of the biggest challenges to education sector. We were not ready to meet the overnight transformation of entire teaching learning process to online platform. Though the urban areas somehow managed the same, the rural sector suffered the worst.

Schools and colleges remained shut for a long time which has a deep impact on the career of the students. Especially the primary and secondary schools were the worst sufferers. The situation has been changing gradually. We are also not an exception; but we have meticulously planned our curriculum on time based on the UGC guidelines and have been able to provide the very best to our stakeholders.

In the Faculty of Commerce and Management, we offer Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), B. Com and M. Com courses. B. Com course is available in both Morning and Day shifts. We are also offering two years residential, AICTE approved MBA program under the Xavier Business School (XBS).

We provide legal education by offering five years integrated, BCI approved B.A. LLB and B. Com LLB programs under the Xavier Law School. The University plans to start the Faculty of Science by offering degrees in Statistics and Computer Science from the 2022-23 academic year.

As you know, a University is the seat of higher education, our University boasts of having more than 80 research scholars in its roll in various disciplines of Commerce, Management, Economics, English and Mass Communication.

The vision of the St. Xavier’s University Kolkata is to practice and establish the Ignatian charism with an aim to form men and women for others. As a Centre of Excellence, the University strives to promote a society based on love, freedom, liberty, justice, equality, and fraternity.

Although the world is still reeling under the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, life is getting back to normal slowly but steadily. Life always has an ability to adapt itself to its changing surroundings. As human beings we have come of age after surviving numerous wars, natural and man-made calamities, pandemics, diseases and dangers. Post-COVID, we are bracing ourselves for drastic lifestyle changes that will go a long way in defining our future and the future of our planet.

In the same way, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata has also come of age and has adapted itself in new ways to continue its mission - 'forming men and women for others'. We do not only dispense quality education, but we also form future-ready responsible citizens of the world. Their grooming is not solely dependent upon bookish knowledge but on a spirit of 'Xaverianism' that is omnipresent through the numerous activities that the students, teachers and staff of the university undertake and participate in.

Ignatian Year 2021-2022

The Ignatian Year, commemorates the 500th anniversary the Cannonball Moment of Ignatius of Loyola - that fateful day when Ignatius, a swaggering "caballero" and the soldier in the service of the Spanish king, Ferdinand, transformed into Ignatius the pilgrim for Christ, after being hit by a cannonball that injured both his legs.

A Cannonball Moment is when purpose meets a new path. It is the understanding of the 'why' that drives what we are, and what we do. In that moment, life takes on a new meaning and our purpose becomes clear. It is a moment that inspires fulfilment in all areas of life and changes the future by asking us to be fully human and fully alive.

Universal Apostolic Preferences

The main objective of the Jesuit Order is to serve the poor and the marginalised people; and to further that, the Jesuits have decided the four universal apostolic preferences for the next ten years to lead themselves on. The four universal apostolic preferences are:
1. Showing the way to God
2. Walking with the Excluded
3. Journeying with the Youth
4. Caring for our Common Home

Safe Home for Covid Patients
The University could not be averse to the sudden upward trajectory of demand for beds for COVID-19 patients in the government and private hospitals. The Vice-Chancellor and his team of committed faculty and officers came forward to convert a part of the Arrupe Building (Library Block) into a Safe Home for accommodating corona patients in and around the university.

The Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, HIDCO and the District Administration of North 24 Parganas partnered with us in this noble endeavour. Admissions of COVID-19 patients were monitored by a galaxy of medical specialists from Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in collaboration with the team at St. Xavier's University, Kolkata.

Vaccination Drive
In the spirit of the Ignatian Charism, SXUK organised COVID vaccination drives for our stakeholders - students, faculty and support staff. The first camp was jointly organised by the Siddhartha Shankar Ray Foundation and Nandlal Chirimar Memorial Trust on June 3, 2021 at Bidhannagar Community Hall. A third COVID Vaccination Drive was organized by the University on 3rd July, 2021 for the benefit of the students and alumni of the University. The initiative was jointly taken with SXUKAA in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal. More than 200 beneficiaries including students, alumni, their family members and construction workers of the University were vaccinated in this drive.
A fourth vaccination drive was organised for the rural population of Gurap village in Hooghly district on 29th of August, 2021. A total of 248 people received their doses of Covishield vaccine on that day.

Collaborative Research Initiative and Social Outreach
Parasmani, Centre for Research and Social Outreach of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) located at Ratanpally, Santiniketan, Bolpur, was inaugurated on July 10th. The Centre shall be upgraded in due course of time with the latest technological and reference materials so that scholars, particularly from the domain of Social Work, Literature and Management can focus on high-end research that shall ensure the percolation of their outcomes to the rural populace.
It has also been envisioned to act as a collaborative link between Viswa Bharati University and St. Xavier's University. A Research Committee under the leadership of Dr. Mourlin Fernando. Parasmani shall also be a Centre of regular formation and training for faculty and students of SXUK.

75th Independence Day, 2021
The University celebrated the 75th Independence Day with gusto amidst a decent gathering of Jesuit Fathers, faculty, staff and students. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Prof. Dr. Mammen Chandy. Prof. Chandy is the Director of Tata Medical Center, Kolkata and heads the Department of Clinical Haematology and Bone-marrow Transplantation. Dr. Chandy represents the community of countless doctors who serve us day in and day out for our well-being. Their relentless service to mankind has helped billions of men and women to avert the tragedy of succumbing to the devastation caused by the tiny, invisible Corona Virus.

Admissions
Our commitment to quality was not affected by the COVID pandemic in the least. This has been reflected in the admissions procedure that the university has adopted for the current academic session. With the cancellation of board exams across the country and the lack of clarity regarding the calculation of Class 12 results all across, the University decided to conduct online examinations for all hopefuls seeking admission to our university. This has provided a fair chance to all even though their board results may not have been a proper reflection of their merits. Thus, we have successfully admitted 1300 students.

New Session
The Inaugurations of the undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes have already taken place in the month of August and classes are in full swing virtually. The university is also contemplating offline classes once the pandemic subsides, normalcy is restored, and the government gives the green signal.

The tiny Corona Virus and its mutated strains, invisible to the naked eye, has wreaked havoc in the entire world. Billions of people have been infected and millions have lost their lives as a result of the tragedy created by the virus. The financial and economic repercussions are also tremendous. Millions of people, especially in Asia, Africa and South America have lost their livelihoods.

In the midst of this is the untiring and unceasing work being done by the frontline Corona Warriors - Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, Ambulance Drivers, Pharmacists, Police and Civil Administration. Many of them have also succumbed due to the virus.

Our Response to COVID 19:

In such trying times, how could a Jesuit institution sit idle when its mission is to serve God through service to humanity. Thus, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata has dedicated itself to tackle the Corona situation in its unique way. The University fraternity came up wholeheartedly to contribute to the fight by accepting reduced salaries, providing food and medicines to the needy and affected people, distributing blankets and masks, and opening up the gates of the University to provide an Isolation-cum-post-Hospitalisation Centre for COVID patients in the neighbourhood.

St. Xavier's University has always reached out to people in their hours of distress. At a time like this, those in our neighbourhood need a healthcare facility the most. The facility, set up in collaboration with New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) and the district administration, became operational from May 12. It has 40 beds, oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders, nebulizers, doctors and allied support.

The Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) is supporting with doctors and medical facilities. The Chairman of the NKDA, Debashis Sen, and the DM of North 24 Parganas are providing all support. The ground floor of the Arrupe Building - named after Fr. Pedro Arrupe - which is 3,000 sq. ft. in area, has been converted into the medical ward for Covid patients. Our Alumni Association is actively helping us in this endeavour.

Feathers in our cap

The pandemic could not dull our spirits and halt our progress towards the attainment of excellence. In spite of all these activities aimed at tackling the Corona menace, we have successfully conducted our classes online, completed our admission processes for PG courses and ensured a fool-proof examination system that has not compromised on the qualitative output of our students.

Thus, overcoming the challenges presented by the pandemic, we were successful in conducting the MBA Final Semester Examinations of 2020-2021 and publish their results. We have also conducted the Final Semester Examination 2020-2021 for all UG and PG students. Even the Practical Examinations for all streams have been planned across May and June and shall be conducted completely online.

Ignatian Year

2021 marks the 500th year of St. Ignatius' 'cannonball moment' - a moment of inner transformation from being a soldier of an earthly King to a soldier of Christ. Out of these events was born the Jesuit Order or the Society of Jesus, which has for five centuries dedicated itself to provide quality education to millions of people across the globe irrespective of religion, region, race, caste, colour, gender, physical conditions and all other such debilitating factors.

As per Jesuit General Arturo Sosa, 'The whole year will be guided by the Universal Apostolic Preferences which, as you know, were announced in 2019 and continue until 2029. We know that assimilating them means conversion for each one of us, for our communities, our institutions and our apostolic works. We ask for the grace of a real change in our day to day life-mission'.

After a 16-month discernment process, the Society of Jesus has announced four Universal Apostolic Preferences for the next 10 years. These are a call to conversion - an invitation to rethink how we live, work and relate to the people we serve. They invite all Jesuits and their collaborators in mission to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit and inspire them to act.

Keeping this in mind, the University has planned to observe the Ignatian Year from May 20, 2021 to July 31, 2022, which is the Feast Day of Ignatius of Loyola. Numerous programmes have been chalked out to spread the message and charism of Ignatius and the Jesuits. However, keeping in mind the pandemic situation, all such programmes will be conducted virtually. May God bless all of us. Nihil Ultra.

The present global scenario induced by the COVID-19 pandemic has put our lifestyles in complete doldrums. However, the resulting turmoil has not broken the unassailable human spirit. In fact, we have fought back to restore 'new normalcy' with completely new perspectives about a lot of things. It is by God's grace that all the residents of the campus have maintained good health in these trying times.

Due to the unprecedented Lockdowns, some of the students of the University were forced to stay back in the Hostels and they have been looked after well. A total of 9 girls and 5 boys, including two from Bangladesh, weathered the inclemency of the times from the safety of their Hostel rooms.

It is under these changed and challenging circumstances that the University reopened its departments from June 2020, observing all safety measures as per the guidelines issued by the Govt. from time to time. Offices and Departments functioned without any complete halt to the academic activities that have a direct bearing upon our students our primary stakeholders.

All classes have been conducted online in a systematic manner, with proper record of attendance and availability of the recordings of the classes in a digital repository that is accessible to faculty and students for future reference. The preferred platforms for the same have been Google Meet and Microsoft Team.

Our Response to COVID 19:
In view of the prevailing unprecedented situation, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, decided to reduce the course fees by 20% and the hostel fees for the Odd Semester (July-December 2020). This was applicable for both the current students as well as the newly admitted ones. Further, the University also extended the deadline for the payment of these fees in two instalments.

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata reached out to the neighbourhood villages, during the time of COVID-19 where University students go for social outreach programmes. Jesuit Fathers with some university officers and student volunteers distributed food items - rice, dal, potatoes, and soybeans - to poor families in five phases, reaching out to 1,800 families in total. The distribution work was organised at St. Francis Academy, Kathalberia village, adhering to COVID-19 protocol issued by the Government.

Earlier, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata joined hands with Snegam Social Welfare and Resource Society, an NGO, and reached out to the people in need during these trying times of the pandemic. On an average, 50 people were given relief materials, enough for three days for a family, at Thakurpukur and Haridevpur, covering Wards 143 and 144. The beneficiaries included rickshaw pullers and daily wage-earners.

Upon receiving an SOS from Sundarbans through Genesis Hospital, Kolkata, Snegam and SXUK responded immediately with food items for 300 families of tiger victim-widows in and around Amlamethi village in Sundarbans. SXUK extended its support to construction workers and migrant labourers through NKDA, at Rajarhat.
The university responded immediately when the Sisters of St. Anne's Convent, Boidhakkhana and Sealdah, approached us to aid them in providing food to hundred poor and jobless people around Sealdah station for two weeks during the lockdown. The Vice-Chancellor was constantly in touch with the faculty, staff and students of the university with instructions and advisories. Students of 'Xaverians in Action' (XIA) association of the University also announced an online campaign for donation to express their solidarity to the neighbourhood people.
Also, on 13th November 2020, the SXUK Family undertook a mask distribution initiative to spread awareness about the precautionary measures to be observed in view of the Corona situation. The students, staff and teachers participated enthusiastically and distributed masks to 1000 people. The Vice-Chancellor distributed masks among the construction workers in the University campus. Thereafter, the organisers distributed masks to people, including Police personnel at the Biswa-Bangla Gate at New Town and among the inhabitants of the neighbouring Kathalberia village.
Xaverians in Action (XIA), the social wing of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, organised a Blanket Donation Campaign' for the construction workers of the University and the residents of the neighbourhood villages namely, Kathalberia, Kulberia, Ghashkhali, Holdepota and Beonta in collaboration with the St. Xavier's University, Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) and SNEGAM, an NGO, who sponsored the event, on 21st December, 2020, on the occasion of Christmas. Some of these villages have also been adopted by the University as part of its outreach activities.

A total of 550 blankets were given away. Thus, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, could bring smiles on the faces of the workers and villagers, in this season of love and hope, through their modest efforts.

Feathers in our cap
As said earlier, the pandemic could not dull our spirits and halt our progress towards the attainment of excellence. We successfully completed the entire Admission Process. Thereafter, the freshers were inducted to the various courses virtually and their regular classes commenced in the virtual mode from July 2020.
Another feather in our cap was the timely and efficient conduct of the examinations in a 'fool-proof' virtual mode. Consequently, the evaluation process was completed and results, especially for final semester students, were declared on time. In this regard, I personally congratulate the Controller of Examinations and all those concerned, who got together to make this successful.
On this note, I congratulate all the 451 students who graduated in the last academic session. Among them, 79 rank-holders received their certificates at the Convocation that was live-streamed over YouTube, Facebook and other social media handles. However, it is unfortunate that, keeping in mind the health concerns of our students, we are unable to open the campus at present. We, therefore, earnestly look forward to the restoration of normalcy and hope to meet in the campus soon as a Xaverian family.

May God bless all of us. Nihil Ultra.

Education is the most powerful mechanism with which you can transform the world. It is the passport to the future.

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, has successfully completed the 3rd Academic Year 2019-2020 and is on the threshold of commencing its 4th Academic Year 2020-2021 in spite of the exigencies created by the global pandemic COVID 19. We are fully prepared to embrace the new changes in the teaching-learning process.

It is my pleasure to extend a hearty welcome to all the family members of the University-the students, the staff and the faculty members. I seek the blessings of God for each one of us as well as our own family members, so that all of us emerge stronger and wiser from this crisis and build a better world for our future generations.

The Jesuits remain numerous today particularly in several hundred universities, colleges and schools worldwide, and Pope Francis himself is a Jesuit. The South-Asian region of the Order is the largest with 4,900 Jesuits, conducting two universities, 82 higher educational institutions, 200 high schools and other centres of communication and social service. The USA is the second largest with 3,600 Jesuits with 28 universities under their management.

There are around 400 Jesuits in West Bengal working in one university (St. Xavier's), six colleges and 11 high schools where academic and aesthetic service is rendered to around 42,000 students. Besides these institutions situated in the cities, the Jesuits in Bengal are actively involved in 16 rural centres with around 3,600 children, particularly, tribals living and studying.
The Jesuits arguably impart the best-known education in India. The Jesuit educational initiative is the largest private network in India today. Jesuit values and strategies flow from the Ignition charism and legacy, which are centred around:

AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM, the Jesuit Motto meaning "For the greater glory of God";

CURA PERSONALIS, meaning, "care for the person entrusted to Jesuit formation";

MAGIS, meaning more or greater - greater service to greater number of people;

NIHIL ULTRA - there is nothing beyond in one's search for wisdom;

FORMING MEN AND WOMEN FOR AND WITH OTHERS - Forming Leaders with commitment and a sense of social justice;

UNION OF MINDS AND HEARTS - it refers to the unity of individuals in mind, heart and spirit;

CONTEMPLATIVES IN ACTION, meaning to cultivate a deep synchronising relationship with God and His creation; and

FINDING GOD IN ALL THINGS - it is the essence of the unique spirituality of Ignatius: "God is not remote from us. He is at the point of my pen, my pick, my paintbrush, my needle - and my heart and my thoughts." It is a way of discerning God's presence in our everyday lives.

As Nelson Mandela observed, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." It is the passport to the future. It is the apparatus to eliminate gender inequality, eliminate in-equilibrium of class, reduce poverty, create a sustainable planet, to prevent needless deaths and illness and foster peace.

We hear a loud and clear call to channelise our energies and commit ourselves to explore the uncharted paths of the future so as to forge a harmonious society thriving with liberty, equality and fraternity. Come, let us walk together with a hope and the spirit of Nihil Ultra, we shall overcome the denial caused by this present pandemic and soar afresh with winged aspirations.

The seed of a University has been embedded in St. Xavier's College since its inception in 1860. History reveals that the College was in a mode of expansion in many ways. The hallmark of the College, as stated in the almanacs of 1880 and onwards, observes that 'the course of study embraces all subjects and transcends the standards of post-graduation.'

Again the Rector's Report of 1906 refers to an inspection by a body of members appointed by the Senate of the Calcutta University - the observations made by the members regard St. Xavier's with the ability of expansion into further spheres of education, appreciating the prospect and proposal of upgradation into the status of a University.

In January 2012, when the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee was the Chief Guest for the occasion of Convocation, she invited St. Xavier's College to be upgraded to the status of a University. And we could hear the ancient voice of history beckoning us.

Subsequently, I, as the Principal of the College appointed a committee to prepare a DPR (Detailed Project Report). The committee had many meetings and prepared a draft of the St. Xavier's University, Kolkata Bill 2016. We had a number of meetings with the Higher Education Department of the State Government to take this proposal forward.

With the support of the Alumni Association, St. Xavier's College began 'Vision 2020' project. The Alumni Association and some individual alumni whole-heartedly and actively participated in this 'Vision 2020.' It has been a hard work and our perseverance has today, by the blessings of the Almighty, borne fruit. St. Xavier's University Kolkata has come into effect.

I express my gratitude to the Government of West Bengal and the West Bengal Assembly for having passed the St. Xavier's University Kolkata Bill unanimously on the 15th of December, 2016.

I thank the Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal, Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi for giving his assent to the Bill on 16th January 2017.

I express my thankfulness to the Department of Higher Education of West Bengal, particularly to Dr. Partha Chatterjee, the Hon'ble Minister in Charge of Higher Education and Shri Vivek Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Department of Higher Education for their support and encouragement in making this 'Xaverian Dream' a Reality.

We plan to inaugurate the University campus at Rajarhat and the first academic session on the 8th of July 2017.

The Hon'ble Chancellor of St. Xavier's University Kolkata, Rev. Fr. Jeyaraj Veluswamy S.J., has appointed Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj S.J. as the first Vice Chancellor and Prof. Ashis Mitra as the Registrar of the University.

The Vice Chancellor has taken up the initial preparation of forming the Governing Board and appointing committees for the formulation of the statutes, rules and regulations.

Rooted in the Gospel values and inspired by the Ignatian charism of forming men and women for others, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata begins its journey in the historically tested tradition of excellence. It is an educational endeavor that accommodates more scope offered to greater number of students.
