The Sports Department of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) is committed to promoting physical fitness, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship among students. Through a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports activities, inter-departmental competitions, annual sports events, and participation in inter-university tournaments, the department provides students with opportunities to develop their athletic abilities alongside their academic pursuits. The department encourages active participation from students across all disciplines, fostering a culture of discipline, perseverance, and holistic development. With dedicated sports facilities, enthusiastic organizing committees, and a strong emphasis on fair play, the Sports Department plays a vital role in enriching campus life and nurturing well-rounded individuals.

Xavier University Sports Society

The Xavier University Sports Society (hereinafter XUSS) is one of the most vibrant societies in St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK). It is a student-driven society committed to upholding Jesuit pedagogy, in which sports and games are not merely extracurricular activities but essential tools for personal development. Student members at XUSS function under the able guidance and supervision of the faculty members, showcasing student life through sports and games. It is engaged in planning and organising both indoor and outdoor sports activities throughout the year, including flagship events such as the Annual Sports Day and International Yoga Day, interdepartmental sports competitions, several sports and games competitions at the university's annual fests, with representation by university students. Additionally, XUSS has developed a culture of organising events in collaboration with other bodies, including the Association of Jesuit Collaborators (Ignatius Cup --a flagship event), St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA), to name a few. In 2026, it organised events including the Walkathon -- Xaverian Walk for Peace, Alumni Sports events in collaboration with SXUKAA, etc.

A) University Playground

University Playground

SXUK has a well-maintained open playground measuring 105 meters in length and 35 meters in breadth, providing a total area of 3,675 square meters. The playground serves as a central venue for a wide range of sports, recreational activities, and institutional events, contributing significantly to the physical development and overall well-being of students.

The ground is designed to support multiple outdoor sports and is regularly used for cricket matches, football matches, athletics, and the University's Annual Sports Day. It also accommodates various inter-departmental and inter-college sports competitions, practice sessions, physical education activities, and fitness programs.

In addition to sporting activities, the playground functions as a multipurpose venue for large gatherings and university events, including cultural festivals, student orientation programs, National Service Scheme (NSS) activities, National Cadet Corps (NCC) training, awareness campaigns, and other community engagement programs. Its spacious layout allows the University to organize events efficiently while ensuring the safety and comfort of participants.

The playground is maintained regularly to ensure a safe and suitable playing surface throughout the year. Adequate open space around the field facilitates smooth movement of players, officials, and spectators during major events. SXUK encourages students to actively participate in sports and recreational activities by providing access to this facility, thereby promoting physical fitness, teamwork, leadership, discipline, and a healthy lifestyle.

SXUK's multipurpose playground plays an important role in supporting extracurricular activities and enhancing the overall campus experience by providing an inclusive space for sports, recreation, and community events.

B) Basketball Court

SXUK has a standard basketball court constructed in accordance with the specifications prescribed by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The court measures 28 meters in length and 15 meters in width, complying with international standards for basketball competitions and training.

The basketball court provides students with a high-quality facility for regular practice sessions, coaching programs, inter-departmental competitions, and inter-university tournaments. It is designed with clearly marked playing lines, including the centre circle, free-throw lines, three-point arc, restricted area, and boundary lines, ensuring that all games are conducted according to the official rules of basketball.

The court is equipped with standard basketball goals and backboards, enabling students to participate in skill development, team practice, and competitive matches. SXUK encourages active student participation in basketball by organizing Intradepartmental games, Inter-college tournaments and trial and selection of university teams. Practices of university teams are carried throughout the year.

The basketball facility is maintained regularly to ensure player safety and optimum playing conditions. Routine inspection and maintenance of the playing surface, goalposts, backboards, and court markings are carried out to preserve the quality of the facility throughout the year.

The FIBA-standard basketball court reflects SXUK's commitment to promoting physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and sportsmanship among students. It serves as an important component of the University's sports infrastructure and supports the holistic development of students by providing opportunities for both recreational and competitive basketball activities.

C) Volleyball Court

SXUK has a well-maintained volleyball court that provides students with an excellent facility for training, practice sessions, and competitive matches. The court measures 29 feet 6 inches (9 meters) in width and 59 feet (18 meters) in length, with the dimensions measured from the outside edges of the boundary lines. These measurements conform to the standard specifications for volleyball courts used in national and international competitions.

The court is equipped with standard volleyball poles, an adjustable net, boundary markings, and appropriate playing surfaces, ensuring a safe and professional environment for players. It is regularly used for daily practice, physical education classes, inter-departmental tournaments, inter-college competitions.

SXUK encourages students to actively participate in volleyball as part of its commitment to promoting physical fitness, teamwork, coordination, leadership, and sportsmanship. The facility supports the training of university teams that participate in district, state, and national-level tournaments.

Regular maintenance of the volleyball court, including the playing surface, net, poles, and court markings, is carried out to ensure compliance with safety standards and to provide optimal playing conditions throughout the year. The availability of this standard volleyball facility reflects SXUK's dedication to developing sports infrastructure and fostering a healthy, active, and competitive sporting culture on campus.

D) Indoor Games Facilities

SXUK provides a well-equipped Table Tennis facility to encourage indoor sports and recreational activities among students. The facility is furnished with a STAG Table Tennis Board, which is approved by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), ensuring that the equipment meets international standards for training and competitive play.

The playing surface of the table measures 2.74 meters in length and 1.525 meters in width, with the tabletop positioned 76 cm above the floor, conforming to the official specifications prescribed by the ITTF. The table provides a smooth, level, and uniform playing surface suitable for both practice and competitive matches.

Table Tennis facility is regularly utilized for physical education activities, daily practice sessions, inter-departmental tournaments, inter-college competitions. It also serves as a training venue for students representing the University in district, state, and national-level championships.

SXUK ensures regular maintenance of the table tennis equipment, including the playing surface, net assembly, paddles, and playing area, to provide safe and optimal playing conditions throughout the year. The availability of an ITTF-approved STAG Table Tennis Board reflects SXUK's commitment to promoting indoor sports, enhancing students' physical fitness, improving hand-eye coordination, concentration, agility, and fostering a spirit of healthy competition and sportsmanship among students.

SXUK provides a dedicated Carrom Board facility as part of its indoor sports infrastructure to promote recreational activities and encourage the overall physical and mental well-being of students. The facility is equipped with standard-size, high-quality carrom boards along with the necessary accessories, including carrom men, strikers, and powder, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable playing experience.

This facility is available to students throughout the academic year and is regularly used for leisure, practice sessions, and inter-departmental competitions. SXUK also organizes indoor sports tournaments during the Annual Sports Meet and other student activities to encourage participation and develop healthy competitive spirit among students.

Carrom is recognized as a game that enhances concentration, strategic thinking, hand-eye coordination, precision, and decision-making skills. Sxuk actively encourages students to participate in indoor games such as carrom as part of its commitment to promoting a balanced lifestyle, stress relief, and holistic personality development.

The facility is maintained regularly to ensure that the boards and accessories remain in excellent condition, providing students with a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for recreation and competitive play. The Carrom Board facility complements the University's indoor sports amenities and contributes to fostering teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and social interaction among students.

SXUK has a modern, air-conditioned Gymnasium and Fitness Centre that provides students, faculty, and staff with a comfortable and well-equipped environment for physical fitness, strength training, and overall wellness. The gym is supervised by a dedicated professional trainer, who provides guidance on the proper use of equipment, exercise techniques, fitness planning, and safety practices.

The gym is equipped with a comprehensive range of modern fitness equipment designed to support cardiovascular fitness, strength development, endurance training, and functional conditioning. The major equipment available includes:

  • Treadmill, Exercise Cycle, Cross Trainer, Smith Machine, Step-Up Machine, Fly Machine;
  • Lat Pull Down Machine, Cable Cross Machine, Leg Press Machine, Preacher Curl Machine, Dumbbell Rack, Gym Tyre, etc.

In addition to the above equipment, the gym is furnished with a variety of free-weight and functional training accessories, including:

To celebrate the spirit of wellness, mindfulness, and holistic development, Xavier Law School, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, in association with the Xavier University Sports Society and the Minority University Sports Society, organized an interactive yoga session titled "Mindful Education Through Yoga" on 22 June 2026 at Fr. Albert Huart Hall, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata. The programme commenced at 09:30 A.M. and witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members and administrative staff of the University.

The event was graced by the presence of Rev. Father Dr. John Felix Raj, Vice Chancellor, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, and Rev. Father Dr. Xavier Jayaraj, Registrar, St. Xavier's University, Kolkata. Their presence underscored the University's commitment to fostering physical, mental, and emotional well-being among members of the academic community.

The yoga session was conducted by Ms. Mayurakshi Biswas, a renowned yoga instructor, who guided the participants through a series of yoga postures, stretching exercises, breathing techniques (Pranayama), and meditation practices. She explained the numerous physical and psychological benefits of yoga, emphasizing its role in improving flexibility, posture, respiratory health, emotional stability, and mental clarity.

The interactive yoga session successfully enhanced awareness regarding the significance of yoga in daily life. Participants gained practical knowledge of yoga postures, breathing techniques, and meditation practices that can contribute to physical fitness, mental well-being, and stress management. The event encouraged students and staff members to adopt yoga as regular practice, thereby fostering a healthier and more mindful academic environment.

Annual Sports Day is one of the calendar events organised by the Xavier Sports Society of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata. Our Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ, always encourages sports as a means of holistic development of students, and students, faculty members, other supporting staff, and alumni of this university participated in various sports events with sporting spirit and enthusiasm at the end of "Walkathon -- Xaverian Walk for Peace" on Saturday, 07th Feb 2026.

Shri Bhaskar Mukherjee, from the Indian Police Service, the guest of honour, and Fr. Vice-Chancellor, Fr. Javier Jayraj, Registrar, Dr Indra Kanta Maitra, Controller of Examination, Dr Soma Sur, Hony. Director, LCERI and Coordinator, Ph.D. Programme, and the Deans of all the Faculties and Schools graced this event.

Annual Sports Day 2026 kicked off with a parade by the Army Band, Bihar Regiment, followed by the faculty members, supporting members, the NCC contingent, and, most importantly, the students' contingents from all the Faculties and Schools of SXUK. On the compilation of the parade, the guest of honour, the Vice-Chancellor, and other dignitaries set the tone of the event by hosting flags and flying pigeons. In their inaugural speech, they highlighted several aspects of sport's potential, expressed satisfaction at being invited to this university, and encouraged participants.

This event consisted of several competitions, followed by the prize distribution ceremony. A large number of both undergraduate and postgraduate students competed in this event. This time, students made several new records. Mr. Anuran Paul from BMS, was awarded the Fr. Joseph Maliyekal Memorial Trophy, and Ms. Aanya Paul from B.Com, bagged the Fr. Joe D'Souza Memorial Trophy as the best male and female athlete of SXUK for 2025-26.

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata successfully organized XAVRANG 2026, its flagship inter-college cultural and sports fest, with the support of the Xavier's Students' Board and the Sports Society. The event witnessed participation from over 60 colleges across Kolkata and beyond, making it one of the largest student gatherings hosted by the university. The Pre-XAVRANG Sports Events were held on 22nd and 23rd December 2025, and were inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, on the university grounds before the commencement of the football tournament. The pre-fest sporting events included Football, Table Tennis, and Chess.

The main sports events were conducted during XAVRANG 2026 on 16th and 17th January 2026, featuring Basketball, Volleyball, Tug of War, and, for the first time, a BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India) Esports Tournament. The competitions saw enthusiastic participation from both men and women athletes, attracting large numbers of participants and spectators. The overwhelming response and spirited competition contributed significantly to the grand success of XAVRANG 2026, further strengthening the university's culture of sportsmanship, inclusivity, and student engagement.

Xavier's University Sports Society (XUSS) of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) organised a friendly cricket match between Team Faculty and Officers and Team Support Staff on December 3, 2025 at the university playground.

The match was held in fond remembrance of Fr. P. C. Matthew, S.J., former Principal of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. The Feast of St. Francis Xavier, S.J. was also celebrated on the same day in the university.

Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor of SXUK greeted all participants of both teams and inaugurated the match amid the presence of Fr. Dr. Xavier Jeyaraj, S.J., Registrar; Fr. Dr. Mourlin K., S.J., Hostel Director and other dignitaries.

Team Faculty and Officers, led by Sandeep Mundra won the toss and decided to bat first. They scored 146 runs in 15 overs, losing 3 wickets. In response, Team Support Staff put up an impressive chase, scoring 149 runs in 12.3 overs with the loss of 4 wickets and clinched victory.

The Player of the Match award went to Sudipto Ghosh, captain of Team Support Staff for his crucial 28 runs off 21 balls and for bagging 1 wicket. Victor Naskar and Amit Kanji also made valuable contributions, scoring 25 runs each.

For Team Faculty and Officers, Anupam Mitra scored 62 runs off 44 balls, including eight boundaries and two sixes. This marks the third consecutive time that the Team Support Staff has lifted the trophy.

Father Felix Raj, S.J. presented the championship trophy to the winning team amidst applause and celebration. All players of both teams received medals.

The Sports Society of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, organized sports activities with enthusiasm and vigour to celebrate the National Sports Day 2025 on the commemoration of the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, India's hockey legend. The Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of the university encouraged planning for this celebration. Accordingly we organized outdoor sports activities between 29th August to 31st August 2025.

The celebration kicked off on 29th August with the Basketball (Boys & Girls) games and on 30th August 2025 Football was played between the university students. The game was played in true sportsman spirit.

This event will be remembered for outstanding support from students, coaches, teachers and support staff demonstrating a sense of friendliness and team spirit, shaping physical toughness and mental health.

International Yoga Day Celebration, June 21, 2025

Yoga is not only a pathway towards physical and mental fitness but also an alignment between inner tranquillity and the divine order. Every year, June 21 is marked as the longest day of the year and is celebrated as the 'Summer Solstice'.

Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of St. Xavier's University Kolkata, inaugurated the International Yoga Day, 2025 celebration with a welcoming note. He welcomed the guest, Ms Mayurakshi Biswas, the yoga teacher, her team, and all the participants. Father Vice-Chancellor reminded everyone that Yoga is an essential component of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) and urged the participants to 'practice Yoga daily and not just on the Yoga day celebration'. He appreciated the presence of female faculty members and Ph.D. scholars among the participants.

All the participants, including students, faculty members and support staff of the university, had the opportunity to experience an hour-long 'Asanas' (Yoga Session) under the able guidance and motivation of Ms Biswas, the Yoga teacher and her team in Fr. Albert Huart Hall. The participants' enthusiasm for overcoming initial discomforts in performing different Asanas was notable.

The Sports Society, in support of the Office of the Campus Minister and IT section, made the necessary arrangements for a smooth progress of this session. The celebration came to an end with the high tea, where participants shared their experiences echoing the theme of this year's International Yoga Day, 'One Earth and One Health'.

The Sports Society of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, organised a friendly cricket match between faculty and support staff members on March 22, 2025 afternoon. Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor of SXUK and Fr. Dr. Xavier Jeyaraj SJ, Registrar, SXUK met and encouraged all the participants, tossed the coin in the air and decided the support staff team to bat first.

The cricket match was played in an environmentally friendly atmosphere in the university playground with all enthusiasm. This match is supported by umpires from the Cricket Academy of Bengal (CAB). Mr. Sandip Sahani of the supporting staff team batted and guided his team to a competitive total and scored a half-century before getting out. On the bowling side, Dr. Tutun Mukherjee displayed a fabulous spell.

In reply, faculty members showed determination to chase the score led by captain Prof Anupam Mitra. Eventually, batsmen faced quality bowling, could not score quick runs, and eventually lost the match by a fair margin.

At the end of the match, Father Felix Raj, in the presence of other dignitaries, distributed medals and trophies to the players and winning team.

Xavier University Sports Society (XUSS) of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) organised the Annual Sports Day on January 25, 2025 in the university playground.

Commodore Ajay Yadav, Naval Officer-in-Charge, West Bengal and the Commanding Officer of INS Netaji Subhas was the Guest of Honour. His wife, Ms. Meena Yadav, was also present at the event.

While inaugurating the event, Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor of SXUK said, "Sports is an integral part of education. It helps to build up a strong body and mind. It also helps to increase concentration level of an individual. I congratulate all the participants for their performance in different sports events."

Father Felix Raj and Commodore Ajay Yadav commenced the programme through hoisting the University flag in the playground and flying a flight of pigeons. The event witnessed the parade by the Army Band, Bihar Regiment, followed by students and faculty members of each department, support staff members, and alumni members.

A series of sports events took place in which faculty members, support staff members and students participated. Winners in each event were awarded by Father Felix Raj, Prof. Ashis Mitra, Registrar and other dignitaries.

AJC celebrates St. Ignatius week 2024

Association of Jesuit Collaborators (AJC) of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK), in collaboration with the Sports Society of SXUK celebrated the Ignatian week 2024 in the university campus through organising various sports events from July 25 to 27, 2024.

The St. Ignatius Sports Week in July 2024 was conducted to commemorate the Feast Day celebration of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founding father of the religious order of the Society of Jesus over the years.

The Ignatian Cup 2024 is an inter-departmental university sports event hosting football (boys), throwball and basketball matches for both boys and girls. The event witnessed the participation of 200 students, including 64 female participants in different sports events.

In 11-A side football tournament, the team of Xavier Business School (XBS) emerged as champion defeating the team of Faculty of Commerce and Management. Xavier Law School (XLS) team became champion in the final throwball (Girls) event defeating the team of Faculty of Arts and Social Studies.

The team of Faculty of Commerce and Management defeated XLS team in Basketball Men category while Faculty of Commerce and Management further emerged victorious in Basketball women defeating XBS team.

The celebration concluded with the prize distribution ceremony on July 31, 2024, the Feast Day after the mass was over. It was followed by a high tea.

The Interdepartmental Games 2026 were organized by the Sports Society of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, from September 2025 to April 2026 with the objective of promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, physical fitness, and healthy competition among employees/students from various departments. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation and fostered a spirit of unity and camaraderie across departments.

The tournament featured a wide range of outdoor and indoor sporting events. Outdoor games included Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, and Throwball, which attracted large participation and enthusiastic support from spectators. Teams displayed remarkable skill, coordination, and competitive spirit throughout the matches.

Several indoor games like Chess, Table Tennis, and Carrom were conducted. These events provided participants with opportunities to showcase their strategic thinking, concentration, and precision.

The competitions were conducted in a fair and organized manner, with officials ensuring adherence to the rules and maintaining sportsmanship. Participants demonstrated dedication, discipline, and mutual respect, making the event a memorable experience for all.
